Some of the security questions on the Georgia DMV website are kinda creepy.
r.e.m.: radio free europe
A bummer I suppose. R.E.M. was the first rock concert I attended on my own and has always been a big source of home state pride for me.
There’s so many things I love about this clip from Colbert
- It’s about Athens, GA
- The accents, my God, the accents. Makes me feel like I’m back home
- It features Oconee County’s very own Ronny Dobbs.
- It mocks newspapers and social media
- It’s too hot to fish
“In 1847, Terminus became Atlanta. In 1864, Atlanta became ashes. After Sherman’s march, a bunch of Atlantans became madder than hell (some still are). They made a seal of the city to mark those years. And since 1865, Atlanta has made up for most all it lost. When you crest the last hill headed in from the west, you’ll see the skyscrapers reaching, like a phoenix, northward into the Southern sky.”

Modern Skirts - Soft Pedals
Seeing the Modern Skirts was especially memorable for me because we sneaked into the show through the back door after a bouncer thwarted two previous attempts to get past the huge line to get in. I was glad to finally see the Skirts as I’ve been hearing about them for years from Southern friends.

Not all fratty/preppy guys in Athens, GA dress like this, but a shocking amount of them do. If it’s colder out they’re probably wearing red pants, at least on game days. Also their collars are never popped.
Shoes are hard to draw.
Futurebirds - Millstones
Another great Athens band I saw last weekend. Apparently they’re one of the bigger bands in the town at the moment. Recommended if you dig Neil Young.
I got to see some really neat bands last week when I was in Athens. The town’s big annual music fest, ATHFEST was going on so there were a ton of shows happening all over the place.
‘Powers might have been my favorite. They had two full drum sets in the middle of the room and four electric guitarists, one in each corner of the room with their own amp.
They played this mathy, instrumental metal that was a lot of fun. I’d embed one of their songs but sadly their Myspace page is the only place to check them out. Still it’s worth heading over and checking out.
Eating a pulled pork sandwich from this place at 3am last week was either the best or worst decision I’ve made in a long time.
Georgia well represented in ‘Best Places to Drink in the South’ list
Saving this for the next time I’m in Atlanta.
