ExxonMobil: A ‘Private Empire’ On The World Stage : NPR
An interesting interview about the unparalleled power and reach of ExxonMobile. Steven Coll’s depiction of it as an essentially “stateless” corporation more powerful than most governments reminds me a lot of the East India Company as described by Venkatesh Rao in this great long read from last year.
How The Glock Became America’s Weapon Of Choice
Terry Gross interviews Paul Barrett, author of Glock: The Rise of America’s Gun. The story of how this gun rose to its place in America’s psyche is full of all sorts of crazy, truth-is-stranger-than-fiction type details, like the assassination attempt on the creator of the Glock that involved a rubber mallet and a parking garage in Lithuania. Strongly recommended.
Really great in-depth interview with lots of insights to the show.
