Oh man, I love John McCain’s appearance on SNL this weekend. It was so nice to see him joking around and having fun with all of it. Plus, he’s actually funny.

The thing that has always scared me so much about the right wing of this country is its unwillingness to even acknowledge a valid viewpoint that’s different then their own. That kind of Black-and-White mindset comes from fundamental sects of Christianity, and their hard line “You’re either a Christian or you’re going to hell” dogma, something that the Bush administration has carried over quite well into politics. “You’re either a patriot or a terrorist”

The thing I love about comedy like this is its humanity. Acknowledging that the same things make  us all laugh is the first step towards acknowledging that we all care about the same things.  If you can get together with your opponents and share a laugh, it means you might be able to get together and talk to them too, and maybe even come to some kind of understanding.

And it’s for this reason I love funny shows and movies so much, and why I never consider them “guilty pleasures”
