This Is “Bitch of Living,” the signature song from the recent adaptation of Frank Wedekind’s controversial 1891 play Spring Awakening. The play deals quite explicitly with the sexual awakenings and teenage angst of a group of German school children, and was banned for several decades. I saw a version my friend was in back at Northeastern, which was just as good and shocking as I was hoping it would be.
Anyway, as I mentioned the play was adapted into a Broadway musical a few years ago with music by Duncan Sheik. The result is much like you might expect, a mix of Sheik’s moody Alt-pop with the bombast of Broadway. I think it’s also a pretty catchy pop song. As someone who grew up with a dad who loved Broadway musicals I long ago developed a taste for the big and bold. The rest of the music from the play is pretty great too, but this is by far the best track
