Fugazi - “Bed For The Scraping”
I recently rediscovered Fugazi’s Red Medicine, which I think is easily their best album. You always hear about 13 Songs and Repeater whenever Fugazi is mentioned, and while those albums are great and undoubtedly more influential and more important than Red Medicine, I still don’t think they’re necessarily as good as the latter. Red Medicine is kind of a transitionary album for the band, marking the dividing line between their early days as a scrappy young supergroup, best known for featuring former members of Minor Threat and Rites of Spring and their later years as elder statesman of punk in their own right. So in a way it’s kind of their Revolver, and like that album by The Beatles I think it has all the hallmarks of a great album: a varied but consistent sound and feel, a loose but deliberate progression in the song order, a clear step forward for the band while still remaining true to the sound and type of songs which won them acclaim in the first place, lyrics covering a variety of different subjects that complement the music, making both sound stronger.
This song is one of my favorite from the album. It features a really catchy pop hook hidden underneath layers and layers of loud, noisy guitars, something a lot of my favorite rock bands tend to do. It’s a great example of the amazing things that can happen when punk rockers start to get better at their instruments and realize that they don’t have to be afraid of pop songs anymore.
