On a slightly related note to my previous post about There Will Be Blood and the Oscars, I wanted to post a link to the music video for Orbital’s 1996 single “The Box” which a lot of people have been digging up because it features Tilda Swinton, the British actress who won the Oscar for her role in Michael Clayton.


 



I don’t know if anyone else remembers this song too well, I certainly haven’t thought about it in years, but when it came out in fifth grade, my brother and I were crazy about it. I had never heard anything like it at the time, I was really fascinated that it was a electronic/techno song that wasn’t designed for dancing. This was probably one of my first introductions to the genre kown as IDM (“Intelligent Dance Music,” a name I don’t think anyone likes) which I still listen to a decent amount today, thanks largely I think to the many burnt CDs of this stuff my friend Bill gave me in high school. Anyway, hearing this one again after so long brought back a lot of memories and I thought I would share.
