I’ve heard a lot of debate about what exactly Tumblr is, and what sets it apart from other blogging platforms. Here’s my two cents:

Tumblr is blogging for people who don’t like writing. The way Tumblr is set up there is no longer the expectation for long, drawn out text posts. You can still make those (see: many of my posts) but it doesn’t seem as expected of you. You could almost as easily make short, media-centric posts with blogger or Wordpress(See: Kottke.org, zachklein.com,) but the usual expectation was for longer text posts. With Tumblr people seem to no longer feel that pressure, and considering how bothersome most folks find writing lots and lots, it might be understandable for the excitment over tumblr.

I like writing, so I’m going to write. I switched to tumblr simply because I was in need of a new service and that was the hotness at the time. What’s really surprised me is the number of people who have switched to tumblr who already had shorter, link-centric blogger blogs, I wonder what the motivation was sometimes.
